Healing Potions are about as iconic as the mimic, levels, and sword and shields in fantasy adventuring. 5th edition Potions of Healing have a few variations, and some basic rules to remember.
There aren’t many common magic items available to players, especially within the Player’s Handbook and Dungeon Master’s Guide. One standout option is the classic basic Potion of Healing, a magic item so readily available it only costs 25 gold to purchase! Having a handful around will go a long way to keeping your party alive as characters get in over their head or make dumb decisions leaping off of buildings.
There are four varieties of potions of healing with various rarities
At common, they are called Potions of Healing, and restore 2d4+2 hit points when consumed.
Uncommon healing potions are called Potions of Greater Healing, restoring 4d4+4 hit points.
Rare healing potions are referred to as Potions of Superior Healing, each restoring 8d4+8 hit points.
Very rare healing potions are known as Potions of Supreme Healing and restore 10d4+20 hit points.
A character can consume a Potion of Healing by taking the Use an Object action on their turn.
Drawing a healing potion can be done by interacting with an object, which is typically done once for free each turn as a part of another action.
Sage Advice clarified a character can administer a Potion of Healing as an action to another character.
Thief rogues can use their Fast Hands to take the Use an Object as a bonus action, making them excellent combat medics who can keep attacking while using Potions of Healing to get unconscious allies off of death’s door!
Potions of Healing cost 50 gold, which is half the cost of a typical magic item at the Common rarity. You could extrapolate that to the other potions, setting Greater Healing Potions cost to 250 gold, Superior to 2,500 gold, and Supreme to 25,000 gold.
Proficiency with herbalism kits is required to craft any form of a Potion of Healing alongside obtaining the item’s formula. Check out this crafting guide for more details.
