If you’re struggling to swim and climb around the world and are in need of a hand, why not take two with the Gloves of Swimming and Climbing? These little mitts provide a +5 to Strength (Athletics) checks made to swim or climb, and make climbing and swimming not cost you extra speed. Nice!
Having a swim and climb speed is different than climbing and swimming not costing you extra movement for some rules and features, such as underwater combat rules.
This means you’ll still have disadvantage on melee weapon attacks that aren’t daggers, javelins, shortswords, spears, and tridents while attacking underwater.
You’ll typically only make checks to swim and climb if the conditions call for it. Crossing a small pool of still water doesn’t regularly cause problems for people; swimming through a whirlpool, on the other hand, would.
