Dancing Monkey Fruit 5e
by Prince Phantom
Found rarely in the jungles of Chult in the book Tomb of Annihilation, the Dancing Monkey Fruit is both hilarious, and also very interesting. Note, this item is explicitly described as magical, meaning it cannot be created by a Conjuration Wizard’s Minor Conjuration. Let’s get into the effects.
A creature that either eats the fruit or drinks a vial of its juice is subjected to an effect very similar to the Irresistible Dance spell. They have to spend all their movement dancing, they are easier to attack, they get a new save after they take damage, the whole nine yards. The only difference is that after the minute of dancing, the creature is poisoned for a while.
So how do we effectively use this fruit? Well, pranks immediately come to mind, and I shouldn’t have to give you examples to figure out how to use it in that method. The only way I can see to use this offensively is to spike someone’s drink with the juice. You could even potentially use this in ways other than making someone easier to kill. Spike a nobleman’s drink at an important event, and watch them ruin their reputation as they dance themselves into a pit of embarrassment.
For DMs, this is a wonderful item to introduce to your campaign. There is no way that this item doesn’t create a memorable moment for your players in one way or another. I would keep its price pretty low to encourage players to buy some and come up with creative uses for them. Definitely no more than 100gp per fruit.
