Bluestalk 5e
by Prince Phantom
Found in Out of the Abyss, and known commonly as the grain of the underdark, Bluestalk are a species of large mushrooms whose spores can be ground down into a powder that can then be baked into a bread, much like wheat. The mushroom itself is inedible, but one mushroom can be shaken to produce enough spores for one loaf of “bluebread” as it’s called.
One loaf equals one pound of food, which is enough to feed one creature for a day. This means that you’ll need to find a bunch in order to feed a whole party, but thankfully, mushrooms by nature grow in groups. This makes Bluestalk a very fortunate find in the underdark if you are low on food and know how to bake bread (proficiency in Cook’s Utensils should suffice).
For DMs, this is a great world building tool, as an underdark settlement selling blue loaves of bread is a great way to show the exotic nature of the party’s environment. It is also easily grown, so settlements could totally have fields of Bluestalk that they harvest spores from to bake bread. This also means that the price for a loaf of bluebread shouldn’t cost any more than normal provisions, so no more than a few copper at most.
