Best Feats for Fey Wanderer Ranger 5e
by Prince Phantom
Now this is how you make a fey themed subclass! We get awesome features at every level, a very good list of free spells, a unique thing that only we can do (double Summon Fey), and a really cool build around theme of fear and charm. As for feats, we definitely want the standard Ranger fare, but we’ll also look for any particular synergies with our features.
Best Feats for Fey Wanderer Ranger 5e
Sharpshooter/Crossbow Expert (ASAP): Before anything else, I highly recommend picking these two up, especially Crossbow Expert at level 1 if you can. Getting two attacks means we can deal our extra d4 damage twice in one turn right away at level 3. I also recommend going with ranged weapons rather than a melee build. Reason being that to get that extra damage, we have to target a different creature with each attack. This is much easier to do at range than melee.
Dragon Fear (Lv 8*): This is a racial feat, so normally I would relegate this to an honorable mention. However, this feat works so well for us that it actually makes me want to play a Fizban’s Dragonborn for this subclass. This allows us to replace one of our attacks with a roar that frightens anything of our choice within 30ft, and they stay frightened for either 1 minute or they take damage. This allows us to basically ignore those enemies until all their friends are dead, then pick the rest off one by one. This even works with our level 7 ability, meaning if one creature succeeds their save, we can just force another to make a save against being frightened or charmed, and this creature can be within 120ft. Honestly this feat is so amazing for this Ranger that I would struggle to play anything other than a new Dragonborn with it.
Crusher (Lv 8*): Here’s a build for you: go 7 levels in Ranger and pick up Great Weapon Master and Polearm Master along the way (yes, you need a level 1 feat for this). Then dip one level into Undead Warlock for the Form of Dread’s ability to inflict fear on a hit every turn. Now go one more level in Ranger and pick up Crusher. Attack your enemy, frightening them in the process, then push them back 5ft with the butt end attack from Polearm Master. Now they cannot approach and attack us or anyone behind us. If you’ve got the stats for a Strength based Ranger, this is a heck of a combo. Also, one level of Undead Warlock is good on any Fey Wanderer build, so I’d always consider doing that at the least.
Resilient Constitution(Lv 8): Don’t let being a half caster fool you, we’ve got spells and I intend to use them. As a full caster, we really don’t have enough spare slots to be dropping our concentration all the time. This also just improves our durability in general, since monsters love to throw Constitution saves at us.
Fey Touched (Lv 8): How much Misty Step is too much Misty Step? We aren’t anywhere near our level 15 ability yet, and a decent number of campaigns never get that far, so I’d say this is still worth it sometimes. The free casting goes a long way when we have so few 2nd level slots, and Silvery Barbs will feel amazing to spend those 1st level slots and our reaction on that we both probably aren’t using for very much. Oh yeah, it’s also perfect thematically, so there’s that too.
Alert (Lv 12): If we want to set up double Summon Fey (or Summon Fey and another concentration spell like Spike Growth), that takes time. We can probably have the normal Summon Fey casting done ahead of combat, but if we are committed to summoning the second on turn 1, the earlier we can do it the more impact it will have on the fight. We also have the capability to do massive damage and just delete an enemy before they can even move if we go first, so Alert works really well for us all around.
Ritual Caster (Lv 16): Are you swimming in gold and scrolls of ritual spells? Is your Wizard friend willing to share? Do you feel like your out of combat contributions are lacking in any way? If you answered yes to any of these, this is the feat for you. Grab a familiar, an Unseen Servant, and a Telepathic Bond because why not? It’s all free! Go wild, you’ve made it to high levels and you’ve earned it.
