Best Feats for Echo Knight Fighter 5e
by James Hopkinson
There is no class quite like the Echo Knight, conjuring an image of yourself on the battlefield to terrify and confuse your foes essentially means you can fight safely from afar while the echo does the work, or you can get stuck in with the echo by your side and do huge amounts of damage.
There is a multitude of ways to use your echo in battle, you can teleport to it, attack from it and you gain attacks of opportunity when an enemy moves past the echo. Being able to attack from its position can give you a lot of control in an encounter and as such you will be looking to take command of every fight. It’s worth finding out from your DM if you will be using the optional flanking rules for your campaign as the strength of the Echo Knight increases significantly when flanking. When you take the attack action you are allowed to take an additional attack from the Echo’s position, potentially devastating if you are flanking with your own echo. Even if the DM has opted not to use the flanking rules, a free attack from your echo is still incredibly powerful and you will want to try and get the most out of this.
The Echo Knight can be a full damage dealer, a crowd control master, or an incredible defensive ally, and whichever route you decide to take, the following feats synergise well with this master of combat.
Best Feats for Echo Knight Fighter 5e
Sentinel: The absolute best feat an Echo Knight can take, if you are playing offensive or defensive it doesn’t matter, this feat will stop the enemy in its tracks. You will have such a presence in any battle that you will be impossible to ignore, combine it with a reach weapon and the enemy can’t even get near you. If a nearby enemy decides to attack one of your beloved party members instead of you then you get to remind them who’s boss using your reaction to attack them.
Polearm Master: In theory, the Echo Knight could block off a 50ft wide corridor with no assistance save from the echo or create a pathway so dangerous for enemies to traverse that they might think twice about even charging towards you, leaving the ranged members of your party to mop up from afar, undoubtedly one of the best feats on the Echo Knight, second only to Sentinel.
Grappler: It feels a bit naughty taking this and using it so that you get an advantage on attacks made by you and your echo against the poor soul who happens to be grappled by you but if you’re not playing the flanking rules this is a great way to get some incredible damage going.
Great Weapon Master: You will be making a lot of extra attacks with your echo and from with attacks of opportunity, so being able to take a penalty to do more damage should average out in your favour.
Alert: Going first with an echo knight gives you the perfect opportunity to set up your echo in such a way that it blocks off an easy route to yourself or your allies. If you have a party made up of squishy allies such as mages and bards, going first could be the difference between life and death.
Mage Slayer: A feat that is often overlooked suddenly becomes hugely powerful on the Echo Knight. You can basically manifest your echo right next to a mage and if the mage tries to move away you still get your attack of opportunity. Take this and delete mages for fun.
Savage Attacker: If you’ve ever wanted to use savage attacker but never really found the right class for it then now is your time to shine. Once per turn, you can use this on the damage roll from an attack and because you get to attack with your echo there is more chance of hitting an attack every turn and more chance of making a bad damage roll. With savage attacker, the Echo Knight becomes utterly brutal.
Orcish Fury(CON): Play as an orc, take this and combine it with savage attacker and watch as your enemies turn into pulp beneath your feet as you snarl away in some incomprehensible language because you dumped all your intelligence so you could smash peoples heads in.
Heavy Armor Master: If you are going full tank this is a solid option, particularly against waves of annoying but numerous enemies.
Magic Initiate: There are so many ways to conjure up nasty combinations with a first-level spell and the echo knight, if you want to have some fun then don’t overlook this feat, imagine greasing some enemies and then putting your echo behind them, not a nice decision falling around in grease or facing down an echo knight.
