Prerequisite: 4th Level, Initiate of High Sorcery (Lunitari) Feat
You chose the moon Lunitari to influence your magic, and your dedication to maintaining the balance between all things has been recognized by the Order of the Red Robes, granting you these benefits:
Insightful Magic. You learn one 2nd-level spell of your choice. The 2nd-level spell must be from the Illusion or Transmutation school of magic. You can cast this feat’s 2nd-level spell without a spell slot, and you must finish a long rest before you can cast it in this way again. You can also cast this spell using spell slots you have of the appropriate level. The spell’s spellcasting ability is the one chosen when you gained the Initiate of High Sorcery feat.
Magical Balance. When you make an attack roll or an ability check and roll a 9 or lower on the d20, you can balance fate and treat the roll as a 10. You can balance fate in this way a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus, and you regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Adept of the Red Robes: Feeling Sassy
Review by Sam West, Twitter:@CrierKobold
Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen brings with it nine new feats to play with specifically in the Dragonlance setting. Each feat has a prerequisite either requiring an earlier feat to be taken from the book, or that you’re playing in a Dragonlance Campaign, all of which end up functionally requiring the character be in the world of Dragonlance. Let's be honest, though: these feats are just as mechanically applicable at every table, even those outside of Dragonlance, and the vast majority of tables can find them to be solid additions to character sheets should you shrug off the lore and focus just on the mechanics they bring to the table. None of them require some Dragonlance specific gimmick or rule to function; if you’re DMing for somebody who likes these new feats, but aren’t playing in Dragonlance, I’d encourage you to let them give it a go should they meet whatever other prerequisites the feats ask for.
Adept of the Red Robes expands on the Initiate of High Sorcery feat, requiring it and that when you take it you select the Lunitari spell grouping. You get a 2nd level illusion or transmutation spell from any spell list of your choice you can cast for free once a long rest, which is incredible on its own, and then also can spend regular spell slots on it. The most notable spell here by far is Invisibility, with other winners including Dragon’s Breath, Heat Metal, Maximilian’s Earthen Grasp, Levitate, Immovable Object, Shadow Blade, Silence, and Spike Growth. There are no shortage of excellent options here to get once for free, and then subsequently want to spend slots on.
Additionally, Adept of the Red Robes gives you a feature called Magical Balance. Magical Balance gives proficiency bonus number of times a long rest dice fixing mechanic where if you roll under a 10 on an attack roll or ability check, you can instead take 10. This feature is invaluable on some builds, and can lead to characters that feel like they can’t miss or fail specific kinds of ability checks. As proficiency bonuses get higher, a 10 will start passing DC 18+ checks with ease, meaning it becomes incredibly difficult for you to fail needed rolls. Attack rolls are likely not going to be that common, as you’re probably playing a sorcerer or wizard, and most of your damaging effects come from saving throws (especially in the upper tiers), but still having a tool to ensure great skill rolls constantly is truly ludicrous. It's like the College of Eloquence’s Silver Tongue feature, where you just see the bard stop failing Persuasion and Deception checks, except it can apply to whatever skill you want to be good at when you need it. This feature is an incredible pick up if you can get it.
Adept of the Red Robes, should you have access to it, is one of the best feats in the game. It is the reason to take Lunitari spell grouping over the others.
