Misty Visions: Use Your Illusion
Review by Sam West, Twitter: @CrierKobold
Misty Visions is my most played with warlock invocation. It's my default option I’m taking on basically any and every warlock I’m playing in the early tiers. Silent Image is cool and all, but man can it be hard justifying spending a spell slot on the effect, especially when so often you want to use it for dramatic effect, as a personal flourish. As something to solidify your character's appearance, to showcase exactly what magic to them looks like. For FREE though? No spell slots required? If that’s the case, I’m all about it, and that is exactly what Misty Visions is offering.
Silent Image gives you a 15 ft. cube to play with that you can put any object of its size or smaller into with as much or little detail as you please. At a base level, this can create cover in a pinch, acting as a hiding spot when you need it most. As you explore outward more with it, though, it becomes apparent just how powerful this little effect can be.
Need a specific creature to appear to leave? Silent Image can do that. Want an imposing figure to guard a door menacingly? Silent Image can do that! Want a nobleman by your stuff to add some legitimacy to your party’s outlandish claims to fame? Silent Image has your back! Being able to take finite control and make it feel natural will vary in application table to table, but you’ll nearly always be able to get a ton out creating illusory duplicates of whatever huge or smaller creature you can think of.
Like all illusion spells, this is going to vary in effectiveness depending on your DM’s Investigation check frequency. At tables that just believe every illusion you craft, this is ludicrous. At tables that are hyper aware of illusions and check everything, much less so. As you progress as a warlock, the concentration requirement it asks of you does start to hamper its utility between fights, often leading it to be something left exclusively for out of combat shenanigans, but that’s where it's normally at its best anyway.
Misty Visions takes Minor Illusion and pumps it up to 11. This is the illusionist fantasy the illusionist wizard wishes they had. If you’ve got a need to mess around with reality and sell outrageous lies, Silent Image at will absolutely is a tool you want to have, and Misty Visions gives you exactly that.
