You can cast Disguise Self at will, without expending a spell slot.
Mask of Many Faces: The Hero with a Thousand Faces
Review by Sam West, Twitter: @CrierKobold
Have you ever thought to yourself “Gee wiz, I wish I could play a different character today. I like this one and all, I just really want to be a Tabaxi right now!” Well, do I have the invocation for you!
Mask of Many Faces takes the 1st level spell Disguise Self and turns it functionally into a cantrip for you. Whenever you want, you can spend an action to change your clothing armor, weapons, size (up to a foot in all directions), and species however you’d like. Each change lasts up to an hour, doesn’t require concentration, and can be ended with a single action, giving you a way to spend 12 seconds to go in between any two creatures you can imagine.
On its own, Mask of Many Faces can sire hundreds of character concepts. The Assassin rogue archetype comes with a bunch of fake identities with their Infiltration Expertise, as does the Charleton background with its False Identity. Now, imagine taking this idea of fake personas and getting to adopt an infinite number of appearances of your choice. You could run with just a handful of looks, swapping around their clothes and decor as you develop their personalities and lifestyles, or never use the same look twice, always swapping to new faces.
Disguise Self fails to hold up to physical inspection, meaning at its best, you probably want to stay as close to your current size as you can, and will want to be very careful about how you navigate a space. Additionally, how often creatures suspect something is up when dealing with people will vary DM to DM; some will almost never make Investigations checks to look through your disguises, while other tables will make frequent checks to attempt to see through your illusions. I’d recommend talking to your DM prior about what will justify a creature inspecting you. For me, there needs to be a couple of odd moments or clues about the nature of the disguise before an NPC looks for an illusion in most circumstances. A fair bit of the physical inspection can be mitigated with clever usage of props and non-illusory disguises. The more you know about your character’s traits and details, and the more you invest in playing with an endless illusion box of disguises, the more you’re going to get out of Mask of Many Faces.
Most warlocks aren’t going to need Mask of Many Faces, but it absolutely delivers on the changeling fantasy many are looking for. Being able to change your attire even can justify trying it out on changelings, who can pair their physical transformations well with illusory ones. You don’t necessarily need both, but they do empower each other and can lead to the body double secret agent fantasy incredibly quickly. If your goal is to be an infiltration expert, a charlatan, or just don’t want people to ever know who you are, Mask of Many Faces is an exceptional invocation to pick up.
