Where Healing Word is the only healing spell I recommend for the early tier, Mass Healing Word is the second option I recommend picking up around 6th or 7th level. Like its 1st level counterpart, it does exactly what you want a healing spell to do. It’s cheap to cast, as it just takes a bonus action, gives creatures enough hit points to get up from 0, and in the case of Mass Healing Word, hits multiple creatures within 60 feet. That’s all you need from healing magic in the majority of cases.
When things are going rough, and multiple allies are unconscious around the room, next to no other spells 3rd level or lower can get you out of that situation. Mass Healing Word can. You bring up the barbarian and paladin, stick a few bonus hit points on yourself and the rogue, and either make a tactical retreat or finish out the fight strong with just enough actions to push through. You probably don’t want to be up-casting this unless you’re out of 3rd level slots and need this effect, as the total amount healed isn’t why this is on your sheet, but when you need its effect, you’ll be glad to pay nearly any price for it.
Mass Healing Word shines brighter the higher the tier, as its cost gets comparatively cheaper the later the game gets. At 5th level, you’ll probably want to prioritize other 3rd level spells that have a bit more of a proactive use case, but as you grow to higher and higher levels, keeping a 1st and 3rd level spell slot on reserve for a Healing Word and Mass Healing Word can give you a nice safety net to fall back on if you bite off way more than you can chew.
