Best Feats for Trickery Cleric 5e
by Prince Phantom
Many have called the Trickery domain weak because of its lackluster abilities. I’m not here to dispute that these abilities are both situational and generally lacking, but I don’t believe for a second that this subclass is weak. Anyone who says that has clearly overlooked the absolutely stellar expanded spell list provided here.
Banger after banger is on this list, from fun situational spells like Disguise Self and Modify Memory to some of the best spells of their level in Polymorph and Pass without Trace. Notably all of those spells I listed are not on the Cleric list, meaning these are abilities exclusive to the Trickery domain. This subclass ends up being the domain focused most on spellcasting of all clerics, and as a full caster, that’s an amazing area to specialize in. This means our feat selection is free to empower our spellcasting as much as possible, as we really have no incentive to take things to improve our subclass abilities.
Best Feats for Trickery Cleric 5e
War Caster (Lv 4): Invoke Duplicity is actually a pretty cool idea for an ability and does have some real applications in gameplay, it’s just tough to nail down exactly what those applications will be until you actually start rolling dice at the table. It also requires concentration, which won’t really come up much out of combat but could in combat. Oh and yeah this feat also empowers basically everything we want to be doing as a cleric, so we’d be taking this even without Invoke Duplicity.
Fey Touched (Lv 8): Fitting in theme, this feat is probably the best option to improve our casting. Misty Step is a spell that we will love to have when we need it (and also for when Dimension Door will be a bit overkill), and Silvery Barbs is just amazing for any caster to have.
Magic Initiate (Lv 8): Alternatively this provides Find Familiar, and I firmly believe that any prank can be improved or made easier with the help of a friendly familiar. I do rate it lower than Fey Touched due to it not increasing our wisdom though.
Telekinetic (Lv 8): We don’t really have a great consistent use for our bonus action (don’t say Spiritual Weapon, that spell deals horrible damage and isn’t worth casting), so combining this with area of effect spells from ourself or our friends can really increase our combat potential. Mage Hand is also a great tool for shenanigans.
Shadow Touched (Lv 8): To be clear, this is a worse feat than it’s Fey brother, but it’s also not bad in any regard. Invisibility is a very fun spell that you probably feel like you should have already had, and your best option for the other spell is probably Silent Image, another spell that fits perfectly with a mischievous character. Fey Touched is definitely better for combat, but there’s an argument for this being better for stealth and roleplay scenarios.
Resilient Constitution (Lv 12): This will shore up our concentration checks for the rest of the campaign in conjunction with War Caster.
